KARACHI, : The World Health Organization (WHO) formally handed over essential medicines, medical supplies and laboratory equipment to the Government of Sindh during a ceremony held in Karachi on October 21, 2026, reaffirming its commitment to supporting healthcare services and strengthening the health system in the province.
The supplies were presented by Dr. Dapeng Luo, WHO Representative in Pakistan, to Mr. Javed Ali Jagirani, Chief Executive Officer of the People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI), through Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho, Honourable Minister for Health and Population Welfare, Sindh. Dr. Mukhtiar Hussain Bhayo, Head of the WHO Sindh Office, was also present at the ceremony.
The handover marks an important step in the continued collaboration between WHO and the Government of Sindh to support healthcare delivery and improve access to essential health services for communities across the province. The provision of medicines, medical supplies and laboratory equipment is aimed at supporting healthcare facilities in meeting the medical needs of the population.
Essential medicines and medical supplies are vital components of an effective healthcare system, enabling health workers to provide timely and appropriate treatment. Similarly, laboratory equipment plays an important role in strengthening diagnostic capacity, helping healthcare professionals identify health conditions and make informed decisions about patient care.
The support is particularly relevant to primary healthcare services, which serve as the first point of contact for individuals and families seeking medical assistance. Strengthening these services can help improve access to basic healthcare, facilitate early diagnosis and treatment, and contribute to better health outcomes, particularly among vulnerable and underserved communities.
PPHI plays an important role in delivering primary healthcare services in Sindh. Collaboration among provincial health authorities, healthcare service providers and international health partners remains essential to addressing healthcare challenges and ensuring that communities have access to the services and resources they need.
WHO continues to work with national and provincial health authorities in Pakistan to support public health priorities, strengthen healthcare systems and improve the availability of essential health services. Such cooperation helps address critical healthcare needs and supports ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and accessibility of medical care.
The ceremony in Karachi highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships between WHO and the Government of Sindh in advancing public health objectives. The handover of essential medicines, medical supplies and laboratory equipment represents continued cooperation to support healthcare facilities and strengthen service delivery across the province.
Through collaborative efforts, health authorities and development partners aim to ensure that healthcare providers are better equipped to respond to patients’ needs and deliver essential services to the people of Sindh.
