By Qurban Ali Khushik
Karachi, November 5: The Sindh government has decided to provide scholarships to transgender students for higher education through the Sindh Education Endowment Fund, in a move aimed at improving educational opportunities and removing barriers faced by the transgender community.
The decision was announced following a meeting between Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah and a delegation representing the transgender community. The meeting also discussed finalising the draft Sindh Transgender Education Policy through consultations with community representatives before seeking formal approval.
The delegation included Shahzadi Rai, the transgender community's focal person in Sindh and a Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) city councillor; Zahraish Khanzaadi, Operations, Human Resources and Policy Manager at the Gender Interactive Alliance (GIA); and Ms Kami Chaudhry, Executive Director of the Sarbhang Society.
During the meeting, the delegation highlighted challenges faced by transgender people in accessing educational institutions, continuing their studies and pursuing higher education. They emphasised the need for government support, an inclusive learning environment and effective policy measures to help community members overcome social and economic barriers and pursue professional careers.
Syed Sardar Ali Shah said the government must take ownership of efforts to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all communities. He noted that the draft Sindh Transgender Education Policy had already been prepared and would be presented to the relevant cabinet committee before approval.
However, he assured the delegation that transgender community representatives would be involved in the consultation process to address their concerns and suggestions and ensure that the policy reflects their needs.
The education minister also pointed out that Sindh's recruitment policy includes a job quota for transgender people. He said transgender individuals who acquire the required qualifications and wish to work as teachers should have the same right to pursue the profession as other citizens.
Emphasising the importance of equality and social inclusion, Shah said society must provide an environment based on respect, acceptance and understanding rather than fear, discrimination and intolerance.
He further announced that special approval would be sought from the board of the Sindh Education Endowment Fund to facilitate higher education scholarships for deserving transgender students, ensuring that financial difficulties do not prevent them from continuing their education.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the delegation expressed satisfaction with the education minister's assurances regarding scholarships, community consultation and measures to address educational challenges.
Both sides agreed to accelerate consultations to finalise the Sindh Transgender Education Policy and move forward with its approval.
