SUKKUR: The three-day Sindh Special Games 2026, organised by the Sindh government, have officially commenced in Sukkur, with more than 800 athletes with disabilities from across the province participating in over 10 sporting events.
Sindh Sports Minister Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar inaugurated the games at Sukkur Sports Club. The opening ceremony was attended by Sports Secretary Munawar Ali Mahesar, DPD Secretary Taha Farooqui, Sports Director Asad Ishaq, Sukkur Commissioner and other senior officials.
Addressing the ceremony, Mahar announced that the Sindh government would also issue Sindh Youth Cards to persons with disabilities, enabling them to access equal opportunities in education, sports and other fields.
He said that 550 athletes were competing in the empowered category, while 250 were participating in the open category. Special stalls had also been established to showcase the abilities and talents of persons with disabilities and encourage their participation in society.
The minister expressed confidence that children and young people with disabilities would bring honour to the province and the country through their abilities. He said the Sindh government was committed to providing them with opportunities to excel in sports.
Commenting on the performance of the national cricket team, Mahar criticised the Pakistan Cricket Board, saying that cricket administration should be entrusted to individuals who understand the game.
He said Sindh had considerable cricketing talent among its young players, but they were not being given adequate opportunities to demonstrate their abilities. He also questioned the selection process, alleging that players were not always selected on merit and that unfit players were sometimes promoted overnight, while deserving performers were sidelined.
Referring to a conversation with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the minister questioned how long young cricketers from Sindh would continue to be denied opportunities.
He also praised Pakistan's wheelchair cricket team for defeating India, describing the achievement as clear evidence of the remarkable potential of athletes with disabilities.
Mahar further announced that the Sindh Special Games would be held in Hyderabad next year, while the Sindh Games would take place in Sukkur next month.
The Sindh Special Games 2026 will continue at Sukkur Sports Club until November 6.
