KARACHI: A delegation of the Sindh Professors and Lecturers Association (SPLA) held an important meeting with Secretary Colleges Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon to discuss concerns over proposed amendments to the service rules governing academic administration positions in Sindh’s colleges.
The meeting was arranged following the intervention of Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah, after SPLA expressed serious reservations and protested against a letter sent by the College Education Department to the Services, General Administration and Coordination Department (SGA&CD) regarding changes to the service rules.
The delegation was led by SPLA Central President Manwar Abbas and included General Secretary Ghulam Mustafa Kaka, Muhammad Adeel Khawaja and Syed Jareel Shah. Representing the College Education Department were Additional Secretary Mukhtiar Mallah, Deputy Secretary Syed Nisar Ahmed Shah and Focal Person Dr Muhammad Qasim Rajpar, alongside Secretary Colleges Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon.
During the meeting, SPLA representatives made it clear that teachers’ rights to academic administration positions would not be compromised. They said college teachers across Sindh viewed the proposed move as an “anti-teacher law” and a direct attack on academic administration.
The delegation also expressed concern that the decision could create tensions between teaching and non-teaching staff. It maintained that the rights of non-teaching employees should be protected separately without depriving teachers of their legitimate rights.
Secretary Colleges Nadeem-ur-Rehman Memon listened to the delegation’s concerns and assured its members that the department would not take any step that could undermine the rights of college teachers or adversely affect the academic environment in colleges.
“Legitimate rights of teachers will be protected, and no law will be introduced that results in injustice to anyone,” the secretary said.
He further invited SPLA to submit written proposals to help resolve the matter and improve the situation.
The meeting concluded with an assurance that teachers’ legitimate rights would be respected and that the issue would be addressed with due consideration for the interests of all concerned.
