KARACHI, October 18, 2026: Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Javed Alam Odho attended the central ceremony of World Trauma Day 2026 as the chief guest, organized by the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Institute of Trauma (SMBBIT) at Dow University of Health Sciences in Karachi.
The event highlighted a decade of achievements and services in trauma care, research, and public awareness.
Prominent participants included Member of the National Assembly Nafisa Shah, SMBBIT Executive Director Dr. Muhammad Sabir Memon, former Dow University Vice Chancellor Saeed Qureshi, senior journalist Jabbar Khattak, Dr. Beenish, and other distinguished political, social, and medical personalities.
Addressing the gathering, IGP Javed Alam Odho said it was an honour to participate in and speak at an event focused on such an important public health issue. He emphasized that public awareness was essential for preventing accidents and ensuring an effective response to emergencies.
He said timely action, immediate medical assistance, and effective coordination between law enforcement agencies and healthcare facilities could save precious human lives.
The Sindh Police had utilized modern technology and camera systems to improve emergency response, he noted, adding that the implementation of the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS) had helped improve traffic discipline and reduce accidents.
The IGP stressed the need to raise public awareness about precautionary measures, accident prevention, responsible conduct during emergencies, and basic first aid.
He observed that police personnel were often among the first responders to reach accident sites. Regular first-aid training for police officers, provided in collaboration with hospitals, could enable them to offer timely and effective assistance to injured people.
“The first few moments after an accident are extremely critical. Timely and appropriate action can help save lives and prevent an injured person's condition from deteriorating,” he said.
Odho further stated that the role of law enforcement agencies extended beyond maintaining law and order to protecting citizens and supporting rescue operations during emergencies.
He appreciated the efforts of the SMBBIT Trauma Centre in providing emergency medical services and promoting public awareness about accidents and trauma care.
Emphasizing the importance of institutional collaboration, the IGP called for stronger coordination among relevant departments to prevent accidents, ensure prompt medical assistance, and improve public awareness.
“The protection of human life is our foremost priority, and all relevant institutions must work together to achieve this goal,” he said.
He concluded that public awareness, inter-agency cooperation, and timely intervention were indispensable for preventing trauma and responding effectively to emergencies.
