SHANGHAI, CHINA: Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah held a meeting with Shanghai Electric Group Chairman Wu Lei and senior executives in Shanghai to explore new avenues for cooperation in the energy sector, building on the ongoing collaboration between Sindh and China through the Thar Block-I coal project.
The meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation across key sectors, including renewable energy, energy storage solutions, coal-based industries, water desalination and technology transfer. The discussions aimed to explore new investment opportunities, promote industrial development and strengthen economic ties between Sindh and Chinese enterprises.
Building on the experience gained through the Thar Block-I project, both sides explored opportunities to broaden their partnership beyond conventional energy generation. The proposed areas of cooperation could support Sindh's efforts to diversify its energy mix, improve energy security, develop industrial infrastructure and encourage the adoption of modern technologies.
Renewable energy and energy storage were among the key areas discussed, reflecting the growing importance of sustainable power generation and reliable electricity supplies for households, businesses and industrial consumers. Cooperation in these fields could help create opportunities for new projects, technical expertise and long-term investment in the province.
The discussions also covered coal-based industries, with a focus on exploring opportunities to expand industrial activity around Sindh's energy resources. Greater cooperation in this area could contribute to value addition, the development of supporting industries and the creation of employment opportunities, subject to the implementation of viable projects.
Water desalination was another important area of potential collaboration. Chinese expertise and technology in water treatment and desalination could offer opportunities to address water supply challenges in suitable locations across Sindh, particularly where industrial development requires reliable access to water.
Technology transfer and capacity building also featured among the areas of interest, with potential cooperation in modern energy systems, industrial technologies and technical skills development. Such collaboration could help strengthen local capabilities and support the development of a skilled workforce.
The engagement reflects Sindh's continued interest in attracting foreign investment and building partnerships with international companies to support its economic and industrial development. Shanghai Electric Group's experience in energy and industrial infrastructure offers a platform for exploring potential projects in areas aligned with the province's development priorities.
The discussions mark a further step in exploring the scope of Sindh–China economic cooperation, with a focus on translating existing collaboration into potential opportunities across energy, infrastructure, water management and industrial development.
Expanded cooperation between Sindh and Shanghai Electric could open new avenues for investment, encourage technological advancement and support the province's long-term development objectives as further projects and proposals are evaluated.
